but i seem to recall reading that at the last turn of the century the two top income-per-capita nations on the planet were Argentina and Australia. Indeed, Argentina with the large estancias (Ranchos) they had back then and large agricultural capacity considered themselves part of the first world, more in line with London, Paris and Rome.... lots of water under the bridge since then Lots of water and Peronistas and their socialistic irrational policies that eventually led to the military juntas of the 70's culminating with the stupid war of the Islas Malvinas originated by the actions of a drunken general sending a lot of ill prepared 18 year olds to their senseless death. I visited a monument "a la Vietnam Memorial", (which is a granite wall with the names of the fallen), in honor of the "caidos de las Malvinas". The absurd ? This monument is placed at the end of a park, facing.... "La Torre Inglesa". I don't know, but I would have placed it in a different location, or changed the name of the tower... but, I am only a rational individual so what do I know ?! I am still learning about Argentina, I am gladly surprised, the people here are tremendously hospitable and proud of their country, I am having a great time ! Yesterday I went to an exhibition by painter Juan Lascano... sheer luck, since it was the last day, and the artist himself was available, so he signed the guide for the exhibit (which has prints from all his different types of work).zurbarangaleria.com.ar This is the exhibit I went to:zurbarangaleria.com.ar His desnudos were my favorites (small wonder !) what a great surprise to find this artist.zurbarangaleria.com.ar With the dollarisation they give up economic sovereignty to gain economic discipline imposed from outside on foreign terms ... if you really can't trust your fellow paisano to govern i suppose it is better than giving up entirely, but i am uncomfortable with it, wouldn't want to see it where i live ... and in no way is that an endorsement of the ability of our politicos -g- After earlier decades of total economic disaster where professionals (doctors, lawyers etc.) would check on a daily basis what was the rate of exchange for the old peso in order to determine their own fees, they have now gone to the opposite side of the expectrum and fixed the peso to the dollar. Creating (in my opinion), an artificially strong currency. Although it is a way to impose discipline as you mentioned, for now they have reached a critical moment as unemployment here is reaching 10 % (and in some areas upt to 25 %)... I guess in that respect they are in line with European countries too *g*. Just 2 days ago, in a province north of Buenos Aires, they ended a protest in which the people had blocked a major route to stop traffic in demonstration against the policies of Mercosur. People feel the strong currency they have and relative high labor costs are moving industries away to Brazil and therefore, unemployment is growing here in Argentina. They were getting ready to use military force, to stop the blocade, however, reason prevailed and they ended the blocade amicably. However... next time ?I'd like to see the Chaco, the cattle country ... the foothills in the rain shadow of the Andes, i hear it is much like southern Alberta, Montana, etc Yes, as impressive as the paces you mentioned, I have been to Banff, lake Louise, and Jasper. Stayed in that magnificent hotel owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway (I have forgotten its name), in the middle of the wild. Argetina is a large country with great variety of climates and landscapes. I am sure I have mentioned it, the meat here is without doubt the best there is and the wines (the ones they keep here), are superb. (I don't get the damned head aches when I drink a California Cabernet, which leads me to believe, it has to be the excessive use of sulfites). Whatever it is, I am enjoying their wines as I have not done so drinking a red wine for a long time.North of the 49th we're all blue in the face from the climate anyway, and the activity in arguing helps to keep our butts from freezing to the tundra -g- Aja... Perhaps the arguing becomes more productive, instead of just going around in circles ? frozen butt radicals would be less of a pain... you think ?
