Bike-to-Work Day is Tuesday, May 16

SAN FRANCISCO, May 15, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Thousands of commuters are
gearing up for the Bay Area's sixth annual Bike-to-Work Day, Tuesday, May 16.
Sponsored by RIDES for Bay Area Commuters, the region's rideshare organization,
Bike-to-Work Day promotes bicycling as a viable way to get to work or school.
Individuals are encouraged to try bicycling to work as a fun, inexpensive,
healthy and environmentally-friendly alternative to driving. With today's high
gas prices, turning to human-powered transportation also saves commuters money.

Those planning to bike to work, school or transit at least one day during the
week of May 15-19 should contact RIDES and pledge to bicycle. The pledge puts
them in a drawing to win prizes, including a bicycle tour for two in France.
Pledges can be submitted by contacting RIDES at 800/755-POOL or online at
www.rides.org. Entries must be received by June 1 to be eligible. Winners will
be announced on RIDES' Web site on June 16.

Bicyclists can grab a nutritional snack at more than 100 Bay Area "energizer
stations" on their ride to work Tuesday morning. Energy-producing treats will be
provided free, along with a chance to mingle with other bike commuters. A list
of "energizer stations" is available at www.rides.org.

Bay Area Bike-to-Work Day is sponsored by RIDES for Bay Area Commuters in
conjunction with the American Lung Association and the California Bicycle
Coalition.

Major sponsors of Bay Area Bike-to-Work Week 2000 include the American Lung
Association of California, Bayer, California Bicycle Coalition, Genentech,
Intel, SAP Labs, Sun Microsystems and the U.S. Postal Service.

For more information about Bike-to-Work or to register for a chance to win
prizes, contact RIDES at 800/755-POOL or www.rides.org.

Founded in 1977, RIDES for Bay Area Commuters is a private, non-profit
organization dedicated to helping San Francisco Bay Area commuters learn about
and use alternatives to driving alone. RIDES is funded by the Metropolitan
Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
