Leading Chinese Website Strengthens Presence in Wireless Internet
BEIJING, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 15, 2000--SINA.com (Nasdaq: SINA), a leading Internet media and services company for Chinese communities worldwide, has signed separate memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with leading telecommunications vendors Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens in China to deliver Chinese content to wireless Internet users using wireless application protocol (WAP).
Under the terms of the MOUs, SINA.com is responsible for providing content to WAP-enabled devices of Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens, such as cellular phones and pagers. The content includes news, finance, e-mail, sports and weather forecasts and is accessible to Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens users at the specially developed WAP portal of wap.sina.com.cn.

In addition, SINA.com plans to make available the special "MySina" feature, which will allow wireless Internet users to receive up-to-the minute, customized news about their finance and investment portfolios. SINA.com also plans to provide via wireless protocol the plethora of products in SinaMall, the website's popular e-commerce exchange center.

"We are pleased to collaborate with Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens, the foremost innovators in wireless communications in China and around the world," said Daniel Mao, Chief Operating Officer of SINA.com. "As a leader in the Chinese Internet industry, SINA.com is glad to bring the wonderful world of the Internet directly to the palms of WAP users in China."

According to BDA China Ltd., a Beijing-based Internet consulting firm, wireless Internet could have up to 6 million users and annual revenues of up $400 million, by 2002. BDA further estimates that with some 40 million mobile phone users, China is likely to have 100 million users by the end of 2001 and will overtake Japan later this year as the second biggest mobile phone market in the world. The country is expected to officially launch its first WAP system on May 17, 2000.

"Our wireless customers are constantly on the move and they require the up-to-date content and applications that SINA.com can provide through this partnership," said Z.Q. Shr, General Manager of Personal Networks Group of Motorola North Asia. "We're very pleased to incorporate SINA.com's content services into our wireless products in China. And Chinese customers will find that the Internet will be one thing easy to touch in their business and daily lives."
