I suppose EMC could sell below cost to steal marketshare, but that would be an odd move for a company in that situation. It would erode their margins at an increasing rate as the strategy succeeded; no doubt sales reps would be penalized for winning such business, based on my own personal experience; it could lead to anti-trust claims in the mid term; to implement such a strategy would require an "end game" that would necessarily involve some new technology/product that would end the bleeding and result in some benefit to the strategy.

I can see them doing that on a case by case basis in their own installed base or in huge opportunities. What you describe is an old mainframe sales tactic, which is very much in the EMC culture.
