Romour shmoomer, What's the difference. We know that SUNW will sell more servers despite chip performance figures. JC Jaros made a good point vis-a-vis the IBM copper chips. SUNW has been leading the server market with a less configured USII chip due to their overall package they offer companies. USIII will massively scale, be backwards compatible, so it will be the solution for the next iteration of server power. The Alpha won't compete.

"doller per tmpC?" Don't know. It isn't a cheap machine. That said it is a first rev. One clue how it will rev before retirement is they built it at full config to have 64 PCI busses and 288 PCI slots. The S80 at peak config has 56 PCI slots. To occupy or push and pull that much I/O there has to be serious I/O hardware behind the scenes and there is. Plus as next gen CPUs come out (EV68 1 GHz 21264B? in aluminum, EV68 1.5 GHz 21264C? in copper/SOI, EV7, EV8) you won't have to throw the box away (trade-in you would hope) you don't trade-in or ditch the box as you will with the UE10000. Compaq engineering is exepecting a factor of 10 performance improvement over initial Wildfires with follow-on CPUs (EV8 with SMT will be the DB king). Now we turn our attention to Marvel... several hundred CPUs using EV7 (on-chip network switch and on-chip memroy controller). That box is the bees knees. Wildfire then becomes passe'. Marvel is a couple years out though and everyone else has several spins on their boxes by then also. Rob
