May NTRG (8x8) Be In Every DOCSIS-Compatible Cable Modem Before Long? -- PFC (Post For Comment)
STMicroelectronics and Netergy Networks Demonstrate CableLabs Standard Integrated Voice/Data Over Cable Networks
Monday May 15, 7:03 am Eastern Time Company Press Release
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 15, 2000--STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM - news) and Netergy Networks (Nasdaq:NTRG - news) are demonstrating their jointly developed voice-and-data-over cable solution for set-top boxes at the MEDIACAST 2000 show at Earls Court, London England, May 15-17, 2000. This solution conforms to the CableLabs DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 and PacketCable 1.0 standards and is being shown on ST's stand, number F50.
``The availability of cost-effective platforms for consumer markets is key to the ubiquitous deployment of data, voice and other multimedia services over Internet protocol networks. Our DOCSIS 1.1 compliant cable modem solution delivers the best cost/performance solution on the market,'' said Christos Lagomichos, vice president and general manager for ST's Consumer Broad Band Division. ``The STMicroelectronics/ Netergy Networks MEDIACAST demonstration exemplifies the successes we are realizing with our strategic relationship.''
``We are pleased to be working with ST to promote the growth of the IP telephony market,'' noted Keith Barraclough, Netergy Networks' president and COO. ``The MEDIACAST demonstration shows the ability of our team to deliver high-quality audio solutions for IP networks.''
The demonstration platform incorporates Netergy Networks' Veracity voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) embedded software running on early architectural prototypes of STMicroelectronics' STV0396 DOCSIS 1.1 compliant single chip cable modem and the STV0397 PacketCable compliant VoIP co-processor. The voice and cable modem subsystems are integrated into a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2010 set-top box resulting in an embedded multimedia terminal adapter configuration.
The demonstration supports web browsing and multiple, simultaneous, on and off-net calls using the NCS 1.0 compliant MGCP call protocols. Calls are managed through the use of Netergy Networks call manager, signaling proxy and a commercial, carrier grade PSTN gateway.
The STMicroelectronics STV0396 is a single chip DOCSIS 1.1 compliant cable modem solution. The device incorporates a DOCSIS 1.1 Physical (PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) Layer, an embedded system microcontroller consisting of the ST20 32-bit RISC CPU operating at 100 MHz, instruction and data caches, on chip SRAM, a flexible external memory interface, and a rich of set of peripherals including a DMA controller, UART, I2C, PIO, interrupt controller. Also included on chip are USB 1.1 device, 33/66 MHz PCI bus and 10/100 Ethernet MAC interfaces.
ST has developed comprehensive product-quality cable modem software for the STV0396. The embedded ST20 RISC CPU handles all of the software processing requirements of a cable modem client including low-level device drivers, DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 MAC Layer software and DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 compliant networking software. This includes the SNMPv1-v3 agent, DHCP, TOD, syslog and configuration download clients, as well as the 802.1d compliant transparent bridge. Hardware and RTOS platform independence is ensured through the use of an Abstraction Layer API.
The STMicroelectronics STV0397 incorporates a fast, highly parallel digital signal processing engine (DSP) licensed from Netergy Networks and specifically designed for Internet protocol telephony applications. The processing engine is a dual issue four-way single-instruction multiple-datapath (SIMD) architecture optimized for compute-intensive sections of audio processing algorithms and that enables multiple, parallel audio channels to be processed by one DSP engine with little oversight from the host processor. In addition, the STV0397 includes a flexible memory controller, TDM module and a PCI bus interface.
The Netergy Networks Veracity VoIP Software includes the Veracity Call Signaling Protocol Stacks that run on the ST20 RISC processor and the Veracity Audio Library that runs on the STV0397. The Veracity Protocol Stacks support H.323v2, MGCP and SIP protocols. The Veracity Audio Library includes a complete range of ITU vocoders and all of the audio modules necessary to build complete VoIP terminal or gateway, including G.711, G.722, G.723.1, G.726, G.728, G.729A/B and G.729E, acoustic and line echo cancellation (G.165 and G.168), automatic gain control, comfort noise generation, voice activity detection, silence suppression, FAX/modem tone detection and dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) generation and detection.
