An analogy to think about - then I'm done.

Lets say we all own land. We know that there is oil on the land but we also know the land is filled with land mines from a previous war. We can sell the land for 2000 per acre or take the risk of drilling for the oil. We all decide that rather than taking the 2000 per acre (the safe way) that we'd rather risk it and drill. On the first day we hit a mine that destroys part of our equipment. Again we can sell or come back the next day and try again. We decide to drill again but not before we invest in a mine locator that identifies most but not all of the mines. As time goes on we drill and in about 70% of the cases we complete the process but in the other 30% we lose our rig to a mine. Would you quit drilling? I wouldn't. The reward is there and the payoff is worth the risk.

In this analogy

Land = Stock - we can sell at any time and put the money in the bank

Mines = The downside risk in any business venture. Stocks are a business venture or adventure depending on your point of view.

Oil = The payoff - the gains we all want to make.

Mine Locator = The charts we follow to determine safety. They're not always right but give us a map and general plan to follow.

Now - add in a twist. An earthquake hits. Knowing there usually are after-shocks would you start drilling again the next day? I wouldn't. I'd let things settle down....let things cool off here folks and we will be rewarded.
