I'll respect that you're civilization-centric. I am not. I have this dark feeling that civilization is not natural, but a deliberate, long-term community bid to transcend our nature. I do believe that the inner baboon is still with us, waiting to take over the tribe.
That is why I see danger in presuming that there are fixed structures in morality. This thing called civilization is very fragile, and each citizen is well off remembering that, and never getting complacent.

Fwiw, I wasn't thinking about collateral casualties from new things like napalm or gravity bombs. Dead children etc. there are "incidental". But you take conflicts like Japan in China in the '30s, or Serbs in the '90s. Individuals deliberately killing individual babies, up close and personal. <shiver>
