Echelon makes its money from selling proprietary electronic components (mainly neuron chips and transceivers), and hardware (LON adapters, and now the iLON, if it sells well) and from licensing their software (Lon Manager and LNS). LNS also requires a small fee be paid to Echelon for each neuron chip installed.

With total revenues of $11M per quarter, they are currently trading at over 50X sales! Pretty expensive, IMO, considering their annual growth rate is about 30%.
