In a move to significantly expand and enhance its test development capabilities to include the latest generation of integrated circuit packages, including RF and wireless communication devices, Amkor Technology, Inc., (Nasdaq: AMKR) is acquiring privately-held Integra Technologies, LLC. Integra is one of the largest independent production and test development companies in the United States, specializing in the development and conversion of IC test software for most major automated test platforms. Integra has aggressively expanded into test programs for mixed-signal and wireless communications devices to meet a rapidly growing industry demand. Integra's operation includes a 23,000 sq. ft facility in San Jose, Calif., and a 20,000 sq. ft facility in Wichita, Kan. Integra, which employs 150 at the two locations, will become a subsidiary of Amkor. Integra recently acquired a small Silicon Valley specialty test company known as Test Heads. That firm's senior test engineers and wireless/mixed-signal test equipment will be incorporated into the Integra facility in San Jose, ultimately becoming part of Amkor when the agreement is finalized in mid-summer. "Integra's engineering capabilities and experience will add significant depth to Amkor's worldwide test development team," said Bruce Freyman, corporate vice president for product operations for Amkor. "Integra's Wichita and Silicon Valley test development sites are well aligned with Amkor's offshore production test facilities and the concentration of semiconductor companies in the area. Our customers will be able to seamlessly move from test program development and verification to high volume test production in our Korea and Philippine facilities." "We are looking forward to becoming part of the largest outsource assembly and test company in the world," said Joe Holt, president of Integra Technologies. "The combination of Integra's U.S.-based test and development resources and Amkor's worldwide assembly and test expertise will provide Amkor customers with complete, end-to-end test solutions." Amkor already is a world leader in the testing of outsourced integrated circuits, with more than 500 test platforms located worldwide and an expanding test development laboratory in Chandler, Ariz. "Integra's staff includes highly experienced software development engineers and technicians with significant test experience in the semiconductor industry," Freyman said. "They are a strong addition to our already highly-skilled staff and will appreciably enhance the test development services we can offer to our customers. This acquisition is another confirmation that Amkor is continuing to be a leader in semiconductor outsource testing." Integra was formed two years ago through an internal management buyout of what had been Lucent Technologies Component Evaluation Technology Center. The center has had an excellent reputation for test service and test software development for more than 15 years. The existing Integra management team is expected to remain in place under Amkor. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Sounds like a nice US based addition to the Amkor lineup. Jim
