Ranger paused in the brush to survey the water hole. His blue-grey eyes were narrowed to chips of ice. Every sense was fully alert. Centuries of experience had taught him this abundance of caution. There on the far side he noticed the unmoving form of Druss the Wizard , blending in (almost) perfectly with the clumps of variegated fauna that festooned the eastern approach to the brackish pond. Then he smelled Death . He was concealed somewhere there on the northern edge, perfectly hidden --but yet located by the keen nose of the old gaunt wolf. Death had obviously crushed some of the odoriferous water plants in his hands, in order to overwhelm his scent. It had not fooled Savage Noire . Now the three, having all located one another, and assuring that no other enemies were near--they now all three approached the pond, and after one final testing of the air, they each bent their heads and drank heavily of the brackish scum. It was long since Death had sought Savage Noire ; long since he had set up his elaborately cunning stratagems to destroy the wise old wolf; long since Druss had stood reckless before the Universe and dared anyone to bring him and his unholy crimes before the Courts of Justice. "I am Justice!" he had always said. None of them had any memory of ever experiencing softness or comfort. They were hard creatures; their lives had been a battleground where suffering was the only constant. Their journey was rough and brutal. As T.S.E. stated in an allegorical re-telling of one of their legendary treks: "A hard coming they had of it...". Now, as their steps grew short and their senses feeble...it was only a Deep Misery that looked out from their weary eyes. Their Eternal Struggle against each other was now overwhelmed by their mutual suffering, and by their common search for relief. They frantically scoured the water's edge for the special plant that would relieve the itch, and briefly remove the agony--the terrible anguish that age and rough living had brought upon them. All three of the pathetic old warriors had hemorrhoids .
