It WILL be interesting to hear what Elian has to say.

I have to tell you that I cannot stand Clinton- I don't believe I've mentioned that before. I am not an ideologue- since no party represents my point of view. I don't like Castro either, or the Miami exile community. None of them have anything to do with my thinking- except that I feel- as you do- that it is too bad they were all involved.

Of course no petition would ever have been filed if the Miami Cubans hadn't been involved. This child would never have asked for asylum- he would have asked for his father- we probably would have contacted Cuba, his father would have been found- end of story, because if he does not ask for asylum we (the US) do not grant it- even if he is Cuban. The case would have ended with no one ever knowing who he was.

It may be better this way. I certainly have learned a lot about our policy toward Cuba after reading the INS regs that I NEVER would have read ordinarily. I prefer other recreational reading matter. I am a more knowledgeable American citizen because of this case- as is anyone who has read about it- so that is good for our democracy. I think people actually thinking about Cuba for a change is good too. It has been a long time since anything really dynamic happened in our relationship with them. And Americans seem generally myopic about foreign policy and foreigners in general. I wish we were less provincial. I am always glad when international issue intrude on the national consciousness.

I think this case is a little different in that his living parent could not be found or produced at the time his petition was put in.

Actually the petition for asylum was submitted to the INS on Dec. 10, and Juan had demanded his son's return on November 27th.

I absolutely agree with you about the incredible manipulation of groups and people in this whole situation.
That's why the sentence, "this is no longer about a child," seemed so apt. I also believe the court system is the only way to resolve this, although I don't think that either side will feel justice has been done if they "lose".
