Taiwan's Chen Urges Investors to Buy Stocks, Paper Reports

Taipei, May 16 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan's President-elect Chen Shui-bian urged investors to buy stocks on the day of his inauguration so the index will rise and reflect confidence in his new administration, the United Evening News reported, citing remarks Chen made during a speech today to a business group. Chen reminded investors of the inauspicious stock-market plunge when his predecessor, Lee Teng-hui, took office in 1996, the paper said. The index fell 4.1 percent the day of Lee's inauguration.

Chen will be sworn in on May 20, which under Taiwan's alternate Saturday work-day system will be a normal market trading day, with Chen's much-anticipated speech scheduled to begin 30 minutes before trading closes.
