I, uh, beg to differ there, chalu. Cliff was a comic type all his own, with what they call a rich history. From the time of the commedia dell'arte, which brought news and entertainment to the decaying remnants of the Western Empire, there was the stock character of the Doctore, a bogus pedant. One of the prime variations on the character was that of a lower class autodidact who pompously mixed fact and fancy. Sam was a version of Arlequino, the mischievous charmer, perhaps in its French variant, Pierrot. Diane was definitely Pierrette, although she had elements of Doctore. Her main function was to be pretty and pure and a throw a monkey wrench into Pierrot's shameless antics. Anyway, the main thing is that Cheers tapped into these classic comic archetypes, and showed their inexhaustible, whatta they call it, fecundity.......
