Consumer prices were flat in April and edged up 0.2 percent excluding volatile food and energy prices, the government reported Tuesday, close to Wall Street forecasts. Separately, housing starts rose a bigger-than-expected 2.8 percent in April. The data were the last before Tuesday's Fed meeting, at which the central bank's policy-makers are widely expected to raise interest rates in a bid to ward off inflation.
