I think your quote sums up the real issue at hand quite well.

The extent of American ignorance about the world around us, and the way that our decisions influence that world, never ceases to amaze me. I was recently reading fairly extensive interviews with people who joined the recent protests against the World Bank, the IMF, and economic globalization, and was struck by the sheer density of the ignorance involved, among protestors from both ends of the political spectrum. It seemed odd to me that anyone could hold such a strong opinion on an issue without bothering to inquire into the most basic realities of the situation.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised....
