You mean like building bridges, tunnels, etc?

Some occupations are inherently dangerous David.

I've never stated that life should be risk free. However, I certainly believe there is a distinct difference between economic infrastructure projects and the risk that should be assumed for the purpose of digging a shiny commodity out of the native earth.

During the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, a project of previously unknown complexity and risk, built by cheap labor in the midst of the Great Depression, yet possessed one of the best safety records in history for a project of its scope:

And then look to the building of the Hoover dam, another awesome infrastructure project (where the invention of the "hard hat" took place) and look at the total fatalities:

Then, if we choose, we can include military service in peacetime where individuals die almost everyday as a result of training accidents.

But to compare the necessity of such risky ventures as I've described above to the risks incurred by deep mining of gold is simply illogical, if not downright ridiculous.
