PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA's (ALA) chief financial officer, Jean-Pierre Halbron, said Tuesday that the operating profit of Canada's Newbridge Networks Corp. (NN) in 2000 should be over the $158 million expected by analysts.

Speaking at Alcatel's general meeting of shareholders, Halbron said: "We think we can do better (than analysts' forecasts."

Alcatel recently acquired Newbridge through a share swap earlier this year.
