The deaths of miners are terrible - never said they weren't. I'd rather die bringing something into use for all time than selling a pack of smokes or pack of gum. Amoung the most dangerous work in the world is tending a C-store here in the safe USA.

Well Ron. ---" Come one Lorne... that was no explosion..

Those miners were mugged while walking down a dark corridor.."---

Just retired from the mining industry a few months back and I have been mugged many times in those dark corridor's
( better known as drifts ) course was only for tools not money. <:-)
But to be serious mining can be a dangerous occupation
but so are a lot of other jobs. I feel that all mining that is being done is necessary otherwise it would not be done
nickle, copper, gold, zink, silver, rare earth minerals, salt etc. All have value and all are necessary. Where would our modern world be without them .
As for fatalities in mining they do happen all to often and it appears more so in less advanced countries than in the west.
I have spent 30 + years with mining people and most that I have known would not trade their jobs underground for anything else. I have known folks that have been killed while working underground but I have known many many more folks that have lost their lives while working in the surface plants like smelters, refineries, sintering plants etc.
Some were fatal accidents but by far most died from disease caused by the conditions they were required to work in.
Check out the fatal cancer rate of cities that have sprung up due to the presence oil and chemical refineries but these plants and the jobs they create are necessary to our way of life.
I think there are a lot more dangerous occupations around other than mining and all mining including gold is necessary to our way of life and the people who do the mining deserve a thumbs up they are important hard working people.
Take care
Lorne
