Veteran UPI White House Reporter Thomas to Quit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Helen Thomas, the dean of the White House press corps and a tenacious reporter who has covered every U.S. president since John Kennedy, said on Tuesday she did not intend to stay with UPI under its new ownership.

``I do not intend to stay,'' Thomas said in a statement.

``United Press International is a great news agency. It has made a remarkable mark in the annals of American journalism and has left a superb legacy for future journalists. I wish the new owners all the best, great stories and happy landings,'' she said.

News World Communications Inc., which owns the Washington Times newspaper and is linked to the Unification Church, acquired United Press International on Monday.

The company said it planned to continue to operate the news service as an independent news organization.

Thomas, 79, has been a fixture at the White House since she came to cover Kennedy in the 1960s. She is particularly known for her no-nonsense questions at presidential news conferences.

Talk about hearing the Washington Times footsteps coming... She's one of the worst diehard liberals in Washington. Check out any of her fawning coverage of Clinton -- especially during the impeachment.

Good freakin riddance.
