I think there's little point in buying shares of operators that end up making acquisitions. Wall Street is now punishing the buyer, no matter how good the logic is.

Buying the M&A target might make sense. PTEL should be irresistible for Voicestream... and Voicestream probably will become a target for Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, DoCoMo or Hutchison. There's no shortage of operators who badly need an American presence. But there's not a lot to buy anymore. I doubt that Nextel is all that appealing; the iDen problem isn't going away.

Of course, the M&A rumors come and go - and when they go, the target shares face a nasty slump. It's a rollercoaster ride and a good way to misplace 40% of the investment if you pick the wrong day to enter. PTEL isn't much of anything on its own. But they did an OK job of maintaining the capital they have; GSM coverage of the booming Southeastern region of USA (including Florida, the hottest European and Asian tourist attraction in America). The roaming angle could work.
