Cell-Loc surges on conditional Internet patent
TORONTO, May 16 (Reuters) - Shares of Cell-Loc Inc. (Toronto:CLQ.TO - news) surged 24 percent on Tuesday after the developer of cellular phone technology said it had received a conditional patent for delivering location information over the Internet.

Cell-Loc said the U.S. patent office conditionally granted the Calgary-based company the ability to claim as its property the delivery of handset- rather than network-based wireless location content and services over the Internet.

Handset-based location systems determine the origin of a cellular phone call from the cellular phone itself, whereas network based systems determine the callers location within a network.

The shares jumped C$5.50 to C$28.70 on the Toronto Stock Exchange in late afternoon trading, but are still down considerably from their year high of C$80.

Lew Turnquist, Cell-Loc's executive vice-president said the patent is one of two filed with the U.S. patent office over two years ago. The other concerns network-based systems.

``If a wireless location service is being provided into the market that involves the Internet in any fashion, then that means that Cell-Loc has to be at the table in one way or another,'' said Turnquist.

Cell-Loc said handset-based location systems include SnapTrack Inc.'s Wireless Assisted GPS, recently acquired by Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news), and Cambridge Positioning Systems' Cursor, being developed in partnership with Vodafone Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L).

``The wording on this patent is broad and strong enough that I feel fairly confident it is defensible as well,'' added Turnquist in reference to the ability of other companies to develop competing patents.

Turnquist said the patent office is waiting for the explanation of a few acronyms used in Cell-Loc's initial patent application before granting the final patent.
