Your explanation of the yodel sounds correct. It seems pertinent that the attainment of a smooth high speed gallop invariably coincided with the cessation of all moaning--yodelling or otherwise. The Lone Ranger was particularly afflicted, and required each script to be precisely written in order to prevent the kind of ad lib that would cause an expensive re-shoot. He used to wheel Silver into an instant gallop--with a couple of quick howls to cover the initial pain--HEIGH! YO!
