Asia-Pacific Region Ships Record 4.24 Million PCs in Q1 2000 May 17, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Shipments of personal computers in the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, stood at a record high 4.24 million units in the first quarter of 2000, up 43.4 percent from a year earlier and 6.2 percent above the preceding quarter. These results are from figures contained in a preliminary report on a survey of the PC market in the region conducted by IDC, the U.S. high-tech market research firm, on May 15. The January-March period was the sixth straight record quarter. Korea, India, China and Singapore led the shipments increase, while Australia, Vietnam and Malaysia cut back for seasonal reasons. In Korea, the success of government measures to boost PC ownership among low-income people pushed up PC shipments. Similar measures were also introduced in China and other Asian countries. Despite some earlier predictions, there were no signs the market suffered any negative consequences from the Y2K problem. The supply shortage of microprocessors had a minimal effect on the market. The breakdown of PC shipments by maker shows Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. was the number one PC company in the region, racing past IBM Corp. and Legend Computer Group of China. Samsung PC shipped 384,000 units in the first quarter of 2000, up 37.6 percent from the last quarter. Legend's shipments fell 2.2 percent to 360,600 units in the same period. Shipments of IBM PCs in Korea, China and Indonesia continued to dwindle. Compaq Computer Corp. of the United States also moved less PCs in the quarter. By country and area, the top five spots remained unchanged. Korea was the most impressive performer, recording a 35.5 percent increase from the previous quarter.
