Mani, I think there is a market segment for a low cost low speed notebook. The present barrier is the high cost of screens. I hear a 14' TFT costs $700-900 or more, and they are running their lines flat out. That means they do not want to make $200 10" screens as they probably consume the line space of the 14".
I fear we are doomed to do without low cost notebooks for a while. The CPUs are cheap. The screen is the only costly part left now. Hard drives, CD-roms, keyboards, CPUs etc are all cheap. The big problem is the market for such a low cost laptop is huge since with USB they can dock far more easily to larger home accessories...so huge that they will retain a premium price. The CPQ $1099 is a start, but CPQ usuallly does not give bargains, so it might be a lean machine? colour?
