Nortel Networks Enables High-Performance Internet for European
Cable Operators

Standards-Based Cornerstone Solution Can Deliver Web, Gaming, Interactive TV Services

LONDON - Cable operators can offer their customers high-speed, broadband data services like
web browsing, gaming and interactive TV with a new, high-performance Internet solution now
available in Europe from Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT].

The Cornerstone* Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) 1000 from Arris Interactive, a
Nortel Networks/ANTEC joint venture, enables operators to deploy cable modems and set-top
boxes compliant with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) J Series standard -
commonly referred to as "EuroDOCSIS" - for European hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks.

"With our experience meeting all of the North American DOCSIS requirements, we were able
to enhance our proven Cornerstone CMTS 1000 software to meet the specifications for
European cable operators," said Oscar Rodriguez, chief operating officer, Arris Interactive.
"And since the hardware already complies, an operator can use an existing Cornerstone CMTS
1000 to function within 8 MHz channels, the normal channel parameter in Europe."

"Cornerstone CMTS 1000 improves the cable operator's speed to market and allows for
immediate deployment of our advanced set-top box for video on demand applications," said
Paul Adams, vice-president, multimedia access solutions, Nortel Networks.

With an enhanced command line interface and Telnet capabilities, Cornerstone CMTS 1000
integrates seamlessly with centralized network management and provisioning systems,
allowing cable operators to improve productivity and reduce overhead costs. It collects critical
information on cable modem activity, allowing operators to quickly and efficiently deal with
radio frequency and provisioning issues. Cornerstone CMTS 1000 is configurable from both
local and central operation facilities.

The Cornerstone family delivers a wide range of premium quality HFC data and voice services
and provides a platform for converged broadband services. With more than 775,000 cable
modems and over 572,000 Voice Ports* shipped to date, Cornerstone is one of the most widely
used data and cable telephony systems worldwide. Cornerstone is sold through ANTEC for
large U.S. cable operators and through Nortel Networks for other U.S. network operators,
international operators and Canadian cable companies.
