Dell's New PCs Have Trading Software austin360.com By CONNIE MABIN Associated Press Writer AUSTIN, Texas (AP)--Dell Computer Corp. on Tuesday joined the growing number of companies hoping to profit from online investing by launching a line of PCs equipped with trading software and investor-specific features. The Precision Online Trading Workstation will be available May 31 and range in price from $2,000 to upwards of $3,500, depending on the features. Houston-based Compaq Computer Corp. announced a similar line in February. The machines are available with features such as dual screens _ one for watching the market and the other for trading. The number of online trading accounts in the United States is expected to grow from around 7 million to more than 20 million by 2003, according to Internet research firm Jupiter Communications. Assets held in online accounts are expected to grow to $3 trillion, according to Securities and Exchange Commission data. But Robert Sterling, an analyst with Jupiter, said the number of serious online traders who would need products like these is small. Jupiter data shows that there are only 760,000 heavy trading households, or those that trade once a week or more, out of 9.6 million households online. There are even fewer day traders, Sterling said. ``There just aren't that many day traders, and make no mistake about it, this machine is aimed at day traders,'' he said. ``This is a very narrow niche product for the consumer.'' The systems are able to handle the complex data analysis, real-time feeds, in-depth information access and intense graphics online investors need, said Dave DuPont, marketing manager for Round Rock-based Dell. ``This package provides a system with capabilities comparable to those of professional traders,'' DuPont said. ___ On the Net: dell.com .
