She wouldn't know who Uncle Tom is. And I'm not sure what you're talking about.

But the notion that most people will not mind - or even notice - a dictatorial government until the economic collapse that dictatorship from left or right inevitably causes is very plausible to me. I've seen it in operation. Many people actually approve of dictatorships, especially in countries that have recently experienced invasion or extreme domestic disorder - dictators bring order and stability, which the average apolitical citizen esteems greatly.

Would you believe that you can live in a police state and not notice? It may seem odd to you, but you can. I've lived in one, and unless you looked carefully, and sought out victims, you would never have seen it. Life goes on, and for most people is quite ordinary.

This is observation, not apology.

BTW, I really don't think you have to worry about America becoming a police state, unless we suffer a full-blown economic meltdown, at which point I would consider it a very likely possibility.
