Rt click the icon and note if there is somewhere on the menu that allows no system tray placement on the icon programs launch.Sometimes it just a matter of unchecking a menu item.Also look for settings.You can also go to the programs file folder and nose around there.Good luck.

After trying Ed's suggestions, if the offending icon is still lurking go to start/run/type in msconfig/click ok/go to startup tab and you have a list of programs loaded upon booting. You can uncheck the offender and on restart it will be toast. It's probably best to uncheck these one at a time to be sure it's not something you need running to operate properly. I removed things like real networks, scanning stuff, ms money reminder, scheduling agent, etc.
