1394 Device From Texas Instruments Completes Industry's Only VGA Solution With Real-Time Screen Refresh for PC Cameras Design Flexibility and High Definition Imaging Provided by Television-Speed Refresh Rates of 30 Frames Per Second DALLAS, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- An integrated video signal processor/1394 link layer from Texas Instruments (TI) Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) for high-resolution PC video cameras completes TI's chipset, providing the industry's only solution that offers full, uncompressed VGA-resolution images with a real-time screen refresh rate of 30 frames per second. Video camera developers will now be able to offer users sharper, smoother images at an affordable price for use in desktop and notebook PCs, Webcams, videoconferencing, video e-mail, security monitoring, interactive gaming and other applications. See ti.com . The TSB15LV01 completes TI's three-chip solution, which also consists of the TSB41LV01 1394 physical layer (PHY) and the TLV990 integrated analog front end (AFE) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The chipset interfaces to readily available third party charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors and drivers, reducing PC video camera systems to just five chips. This results in making high-resolution cameras smaller, easier to manufacture and more economical. This second-generation chipset supports the IEEE 1394a high-speed serial bus specification and the 1394 Trade Association camera specification 1.04. Design flexibility and high definition imaging are provided by television- speed refresh rates of 30 fps, with support for uncompressed resolutions up to 640 x 480 (VGA) using various YUV and RGB color formats. Rapid transmission of the complete image is ensured by support for the full 1394a bandwidth of 400 Megabits per second (Mbps). To reduce development time, TI provides its customers with diagnostic testing software, Windows(R) and Macintosh(R) application drivers, ready-to- use single- and multiple-image capture programs, and the ability to interact with applications enabled by the widely-used TWAIN environment. Other development support includes an evaluation module (EVM), reference design, data sheet and application notes. TI's Leadership in 1394 Solutions With its high bandwidth and ease of interface, the 1394 high-speed serial bus is widely used in consumer products for digital video and multimedia transmission. As multimedia applications become more important today, PCs are increasingly being shipped with 1394 interfaces built into the system. The 1394 standard provides for repeating signals to lengthen connections, peer-to- peer connections that bypass PCs, and the support of multiple cameras and other peripherals on a single bus. These features enable more widespread, flexible networked applications with better image quality than is possible on the Universal Serial Bus (USB), which currently has a bandwidth limit of 12 Mbps. TI pioneered silicon support for the 1394 standard in 1994, and the company has continued to be the industry leader in the market for 1394 solutions. TI plans future PC camera chipsets to have increased integration and include support for CMOS sensors. "TI is dedicated to driving 1394 video cameras into the mainstream of PC video applications," said Randall Trost, 1394 worldwide marketing manager. "The TSB15LV01 brings fast, high-definition imaging that makes the experience of live PC video more satisfying to users and will stimulate the development of new video applications." Availability, Pricing, Packaging The TSB15LV01 integrated video processor/1394 link layer is available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The device is packaged in a 80-pin thin quad flatpack (TQFP). Suggested resale pricing for the TSB15LV01 is $5.61 each in quantities of 1,000. The TLV990 AFE/ADC and TSB41LV01 PHY are also available now from TI and its authorized distributors, completing availability of the full chipset.
