Barnes & Noble.com Launches
Its Same-Day Delivery Service

An INTERACTIVE JOURNAL News Roundup

NEW YORK -- Barnes & Noble.com Inc. announced the launch of same-day delivery in Manhattan in an attempt to get a leg up on online retail giant Amazon.com Inc. and fend off fast-growing upstarts that already offer speedy service.

The new service, which the company began testing last year, will allow customers to order books and music and have them delivered the same day at standard shipping rates.

"Manhattan represents the largest concentration of book buyers in the world," said Vice Chairman and acting Chief Executive Stephen Riggio in an interview on CNBC Tuesday. "We think customers are going to love it."

While Barnes & Noble.com said the move makes it the first online bookseller to deliver books and music on the same day they are ordered, other online services -- such as Kozmo.com and Urbanfetch -- have been delivering these items for some time now in Manhattan and other areas.

Since its inception, Barnes & Noble.com has struggled in the shadow of Web giant Amazon. Still, the prospect of quick delivery could be a major boon to Barnes & Noble.com.

Under Barnes & Noble.com's plan, customers in Manhattan who place orders by 11 a.m. will receive their merchandise by 7 p.m. that day. The service includes residential and business addresses, the company said.

Barnes & Noble.com has contracted with delivery service Dispatch Management Services.
