Rather than the customer ordering the system direct, though, a much more common scenario is the data service provider ordering the system in a configuration that works for the customer.

you can order it DIRECT from others
The Dell way is to offer the products that appeal to the largest demand. The largest customers still get whatever they want. In general, selling very sophisticated equipment to the general public leads to more support costs than the product is worth to Dell. If Goldman Sachs wants 100 machines with 6 monitors they will get them, John Q. Investor and 95% of his friends will be satisfied with the current offer. That's how Dell continues to make a profit while other companies are bleeding cash.
