I planned on seeing it in IMAX but never got around to it: Disney's 'Fantasia/2000' Busts Out in June With a One-Month 35mm Theatrical Release and a Sotheby's Auction of Six One-of-a-Kind Masterworks BURBANK, Calif., May 17, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Walt Disney Pictures' animated extravaganza "Fantasia/2000" is headed to 35mm theaters everywhere on June 16th for a four-week engagement (6/16-7/11), it was announced today (5/17) by Richard Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group. This wide release follows the film's exclusive IMAX(R) engagement, during which it grossed $64.5 million in just 75 theaters around the world and became the fastest-grossing large-format film in industry history. "Fantasia/2000" was initiated and spearheaded by Roy Edward Disney, vice chairman of The Walt Disney Company and the film's executive producer. To further celebrate the film's expansion, a special auction will take place on June 29th at the Sotheby's showroom in New York, where the "Fantasia/2000 Masterworks" -- six one-of-a-kind creations by top designers -- will be offered to the public along with a selection of incredible art from "Fantasia/2000." The auction will also include 163 pieces of art from Disney's 1999 animated blockbuster, "Tarzan." The "Fantasia/2000 Masterworks" collection includes unique items inspired by the film and created by the top artists, artisans and craftspeople from Cartier, Tiffany and Co., Mikimoto, Steiff, Harry Winston and Dolce & Gabbana. Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, "'Fantasia/2000' has been a tremendous success in its IMAX engagements and this expansion will bring the film to the widest possible audience all over the country. The 'Fantasia/2000 Masterworks' auction at Sotheby's provides a great send-off to the film's expanded run and is a rare opportunity for collectors to own a work of art associated with the film." The "Fantasia/2000 Masterworks" collection, was unveiled in New York City last December and subsequently displayed at world premieres in London, Paris, Tokyo and Pasadena, California (on New Year's Eve at the Millennium Gala). The collection includes an extraordinary pearl necklace with matching earrings, inspired by the "Pines of Rome" sequence and designed by Mikimoto; Harry Winston's gem and diamond bangle bracelet themed to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue;" a sterling silver and enamel sculpture, designed by Tiffany & Co. and inspired by the sequence, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," which was the animators' interpretation of Stostakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 2;" a Cartier-created pink and white diamond brooch which captures the esprit-de-coeur of Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals;" a mohair plush sculpture by Steiff, which was inspired by Donald Duck's starring turn in the "Pomp and Circumstance" segment of a sequence in "Fantasia/2000" in which Donald herds together two of every species, each more cantankerous than the next; and finally, a couture gown that expresses all the beauty and grace of the Sprite as seen in the film's finale, Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite."
