Chaz,

<< good news and permits crossing from one installed base to another flavor of 3rd gen CDMA, no >>

Sounds like it. I think that is what this says:

3GPP2 also developed "cross-mode" specifications based on the recommendation of the Operators Harmonization Group (OHG). These two specifications enable operation of cdma2000 on an evolved GSM-MAP (Mobile Application Part) network and W-CDMA (Wideband CDMA) on an evolved American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-41 network and will be included in IMT-2000.

The recent SIM/R-UIM specification rushed through TIA contributed to this. My take is that GSM/UMTS proponents can no longer say that carriers that adopt cdma2000 are stranded and can't participate in global roaming initiatives with the GSM/GPRS/UMTS world, although cdma2000 could and probably does have some backward compatability issues with GSM/GPRS and UMTS might have less (thats hard for me to say).

<< Do you see this adopted by the ITU in Istanbul? >>

Although one should NEVER assume anything ...

I assume this has happened and that was what was being referred to in the 8 May 2000 ITU press release "ITU gives final approval to IMT-2000 radio interface specifications" out of Istanbul:

itu.int

I assume same for the 3GPP 'Release99' (i.e. approved and final). While there is no new press release on the 3GPP site the original "communiqu‚" issued out of Korea on 19th October (3rd Generation Partnership Project approves specifications for IMT-2000 & Project model adopted for Release 2000 onwards) has been updated with extra news and updates:

* A common vocabulary for 3GPP.
* Customized LAN revolutionizes 3GPP meetings
* 3GPP establishes new working interface to ITU-T
* Release 1999 - a December deadline

The full PDF file is here and its worth a read:

3gpp.org

I think we need to keep in mind that on both sides we have final 1st phase specifications for 3G that will evolve over the rest of the decade and we may continue to hear from one side or the other that the specification is not final.

I really am hopeful that eventually 3GPP will merge into 3GPP2.

I am also hopeful that when the Istanbul meetings complete, on or before June 2, that we see some comprehensive analysis of what went on.

... but yes, good news. Time to move on to harmonized 3G and meaningful wireless data services (mobile & fixed).

<< do you have any clues on the status of approval (if any) of HDR? >>

Not a clue! last I knew, (if I did not dream it) we potentially had 2 proposals in 3GPP2 for submission to the ITU. One was sponsored by Erricson & Qualcomm (1X & HDR) and the other by Motorola and Nokia (Plus or Minus or Extreme or whatever). I have no visibility on this whatsoever.
