Eric, Stan and all,

Now here I've folded in some competing technologies that don't produce revenue for Qualcomm, and I don't know how to sort that back out.

Stan brought the subject up in the context of projecting Q's revenue. But it's important to remember that sorting out all the different competitors isn't necessary to determine if a tornado is blowing.

Using applications software industries as an example, the tornado measures the industry-wide product adoption of all the competing technologies hoping to win the gold medal. Similarly, we should look at competing technologies in the wireless biz as part of our tornado analysis.

One reason I make no attempt to be an analyst is because I don't have access to all the detailed information provided to the analysts including the stuff Eric mentioned. And I'm not allowed to call a CEO or CFO of the larger companies I tend to invest in these days and ask the same questions analysts ask. Not having that info, I don't try to project revenue or earnings.
