We have never had any shortage of scandal, nor of shameful acts performed by government. I see no reason to suspect that we have any more of these things today than we had 10, 20, 50, or 100 years ago. If somebody was holding my son against my will and refused to surrender him to me, I wouldn't mind at all if government agents threatened to blow him away. Helping to rescue a kid is largely a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I've done it myself. It didn't give me the right to keep the kid as my own personal publicity-generator.
