JW: Sorry about your friend. Sounds like it might be Guillain-Barre syndrome. Onset usually comes after a slight respiratory infection or just a cold, no fever but general numbness starting with feet and then increasing pain. G-B is relatively rare and hard to diagnose unless you are looking for it. Even though we are a stone's throw from MGH, my neighbor had G-B for six months before the docs correctly diagnosed. Symptoms you describe could also fit lyme disease. Are you in tick territory? Hope she recovers quickly. Judith

Jim,
The hand pain could be not directly related to the leg-foot pain. The leg-foot pain could be Sciatica (irritation of the sciatic nerve which can show up anywhere from the buttocks down to the feet but is ususally not on both sides (left and right legs) at the same time to the same degree. Another possibility is fibromyalgia--pain in the soft tissue, sometimes from an unknown cause.Lupus or Lymes disease are also possible. Has she been exposed to toxins-chemicals that may be hiding in the soft tissue and causing inflamation?

If the pain is on both sides concurrently she should see an MD asap.

Good luck, Donald
