Please, David, that's not a valid argument!

Using a CNXT modem, a laptop (or PDA), and a cell phone with CNXT chips in it, you could do your programming from practically ANYWHERE in the world at anytime. This may not increase your actual productivity on an hourly basis but it gives you the flexibility you simply didn't have a few years ago. You can also maintain custom code from remote sites much easier with today's technology.

You could get out of your cubicle/office and lay on the beach, doing the same job if your discipline was strong enough!!! I know I would get distracted too easily<gg>.

That's where you're wrong. Your productivity isn't just the amount of source code you produce. It's the amount of GOOD source code.
You could program all day long, and come up with a pile of dung (I've seen that happen) because you didn't have good enough information, or access to it. Hence, the cell phone may assist you in getting timely information or help when you've hit a snag. It may also allow you to be reached when you are on the road so another programmer can get assistance on some code you've written (thereby raising both your productivity levels).
IM may not help you, but it helps me immensely, as well as millions of others.
Email, you can't live without, but if you apply the same logic (that communications improves productivity), you'd realize the value it has accrued to you doing your job well.
