JDN - major engineering always carries risk, and engineers tend to underestimate the difficulty of multiple major changes done at the same time. CPQ's wildfire was scheduled to launch in summer of 1998. Win2K was scheduled for fall of 1998. Merced (now Itanium) was end of year 1998 originally. AMD Sledgehammer was summer 2000.

The slip of the Sparc III is not unusual. But management is being a little disingenuous, I think - the "schedule" they are holding is the most recently revised one. Still, if they get some products to market this year, and server products by year end, they will probably be OK.
