From Cisco 827 ADSL Routers brochure -

"Figure 2. The Cisco 827-4V, which supports VoIP (annd software upgradeable to voice over ATM (VoATM) in a future release), allows service providers to offer multiple lines of toll-quality voice service with high-speed data access over a single pair of copper wires".

I think this quote is VERY enlightening in terms of the direction Cisco is going. Small, cheap, pervasive, and easy to administer, Voice over IP (and especially voice over ATM) is going to creep into EVERYTHING Cisco does.

Think there is thought going on in traditional telco companies that goes something like this:

"Hey wait a minute, we sell them the copper wire service for about $15/month and the DSL service for $40/month, then they turn around and burn voice data right over the same line, except for the fact they run maybe 10-20 simultaneous lines, doesn't that mean we're missing out on $150 to $300 (10-20 lines x $15/line approximate) per MONTH!"

This technology will infiltrate most homes, and Cisco needs to get an el cheapo router, firewall, VoIP/VoATM system going for about $250 out the door. Do that, and Cisco will indeed be in EVERY home just about. Beat up Alcatel in the DSL market would not be a bad place for CSCO to be fighting a battle.
