Rectron Signs Distribution Deal With AMD Johannesburg (ITWeb, May 18, 2000) - JSE-listed Rectron Holdings, one of South Africa's largest information technology distributors, has signed an agreement with US-based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for the distribution of AMD micro processors in South Africa. AMD is the world's second largest semiconductor manufacturer behind Intel and its products include a wide variety of industry-standard processors used in product applications such as telecommunications equipment, data and network communications equipment, consumer electronics, personal computers and workstations. Rectron CEO Mark Lu estimates that AMD currently holds around 17% of the South African market and his aim is to increase this share to 30% - worth about R 30-million annually. Says Lu: "The appointment as an official AMD distributor presents us with many challenges. Not least of which is the high percentage of 'grey' product in the marketplace which must be supported in some way. "There is also the need to target corporate users whose needs have not been addressed previously. "However, there are opportunities as well, as Rectron is able to bundle AMD processors with its own motherboard, workstation and hard drive offerings to present its channel partners with a complete AMD solution for the first time."
