Speaking of the bottom of the barrel: Henderson and Mariners agree to contract May 17, 2000 (The Sports Network via COMTEX) -- Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners have agreed to a contract with veteran outfielder Rickey Henderson, who was released by the New York Mets this past Saturday. The Mariners have not commented on terms of the contract, only saying that it includes a club option for 2001. The Mariners would be responsible for only about $150,000 of Henderson's salary this year, with the Mets paying the rest. He will likely fill the role of leadoff hitter and leftfielder for Seattle. The 41-year-old Henderson, baseball's all-time leader in stolen bases, hit just .219 with no homers and two runs batted in for the Mets this season. He has five stolen bases this season and 1,339 in his Hall of Fame career. The Mets tried to trade Henderson during spring training, but found no takers. He hit .315 with the Mets last season and stole 37 bases. The Mariners will be Henderson's seventh team since breaking into the big leagues in 1979. He has played four different times with Oakland, his original team, spent time with the New York Yankees, Toronto, San Diego and Anaheim before joining the Mets before the 1999 season.
