Slacker: Thanks for picking up on that one. It is not a topic yet, but then that is why I wanted to throw it out there. As it stands nobody has really gone beyond the idea of deploying GPRS in existing spectrum. Now plans would of course depend on uptake to WCDMA. If we take the analogue to digital customer migration, it took about 5 years before there was a concerted effort to migrate analogue subscribers to GSM. Only one country to date that I know of has actually said they are closing down the analogue network (Norway). There have been discussions that have indicated an extended role for GSM by way of dual-mode phones: GSM for voice and data services via WCDMA. Now thinking 10 years ahead (when the final discussions will start to be concluded regarding 4G!) who rightly knows what will happen. However, the 900MHz operators don't have considerable spectrum and that is probably the biggest guess as to what will happen. Frankly, I don't know. However, after talking to an 1800MHz operator (One2One) recently, they were saying that they could quite conceivably get 3G services via EDGE. Well they have one a 3G license now, so not sure if that is an option currently. In the longer term, and the availability of dual-mode handsets, lets say cdma2000 or HDR and WCDMA they could quite conceivably go for a more limited 3G service on the current spectrum - could be used as a fallback/redundancy option. Mind you all this is debatable, questions basically revolve around the feasibility and business case to do so. Having said that, there are quite a few 1800MHz operators around the planet and as we have seen, it is the size of market that determines what much happens in what technology is deployed. Interested in yours and others views, s I am trying to get someone interested as I would like to write something about it. Cheers, M
