RE: Ethernet storage aka SCSI over IP:

JFieb,

I think Dr. Rauechle shared many of our opinions that GE is certainly nothing to dismiss, but that they were a long way out with the technology. That sharing of opinion is not equally weighted since he is obviously an expert. He added a much broader perspective, since I asked him about some finer points discussed here like the issue of SCSI packets arriving in order over IP, the IP stack on the chip, and whether or not switching would be required on the disk side of a 10 Gbps adapter. He acknowledged the technical problems, but also that there may be technical solutions to the problems. There are also cost factors involved in both the 10 Gbps GE optics and on the disk side that may slow down the product adaptation. Ed's post today seems to confirm that the SAN market will be healthy in the near future.

I am trying to pull together some actual technical facts starting with the GE NICs and will post that when I get it.
