Syncman, Actually, NT owns 16.6%..I posted some excerpts from the S1 (IPO filing) on the NT thread. the terabit router is supposed to compete with CSCO and JNPR in the high end router space. At first glance, it looks like Avici needed to raise more capital. tp

Sync,

avici.com

Avici took a box and slapped gobs of interfaces on it. Not sure about all the specs but it lacks some key software capabilities such as BGP. Fundamentally it's not about how many interfaces you can put in a box - it's about what kind of services can easily, quickly, and reliably be deployed. Avici has a good start but the market is closing quickly since most carriers are aligned with Cisco or Juniper by now. It'll be a challenge - not insurmountable though - no more so that Cisco's penetration into the optical market... well actually a little more so. I'd say Cisco's chances of capturing share in the optical market is greater than Avici's in the core routing space. ;)

Syncman, The Avici terabit router was developed with the cooperation of Nortel who withdrew from participation in the project after they decided to go with the Versalar router Nortel developed in house. Since then, Enron has made an investment in Avici. Enron apparently has decided to deploy
Avici's terabit router. Williams has also committed to purchase a minimum number of Avici routers.

Syncman, here is Avici's statement about their router, the TSR, from the filing.

Currently, the TSR is deployed in a segment of The National Transparent Optical Network, an Internet initiative known as SuperNet. In addition, Enron Broadband Services and Williams Communications have agreed to future purchases of the TSR, subject to successful completion of field trials. The TSR has successfully completed laboratory testing at AT&T and has been selected by AT&T for field trials. We have also shipped the TSR to a limited number of other customers and prospective customers.
