Xfera Invites 7 Telecoms To Bid On Contract - Cinco Dias
Dow Jones Newswires

Dow Jones Newswires -- May 18, 2000

MADRID -- The Xfera consortium has asked seven telecommunications companies to bid for a contract to supply its cell-phone operations, Cinco Dias reported Thursday.

The Spanish financial daily said Xfera Nokia, Ericcsson (ERICY), Motorola (MOT), Lucent (LU), Alcatel (F.ALC), Siemens (G.SIE) and Nortel (ARTM) will present their offers in the first week of June.

The selection process will be completed before the end of summer, according to Cinco Dias.

Xfera holds a license to operate the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, or UMTS, in Spain. This technology links mobile phones to the Internet - a potentially revolutionary market.

Xfera's shareholders include Sonera Corp. (SNRA) of Finland, Vivendi SA (F.VVN) of France, Actividades de Construccion y Servicios SA (E.GNC), Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA (E.FCC), Autopistas Concesionaria Espanola SA (E.ACE), known as Acesa.

Sources from consortium companies were unavailable for comment.
