McGwire Hits Three Homers in Cards` Win Over Phils

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Mark McGwire passed another legend on his way to baseball immortality.

McGwire blasted three homers, passing Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle for eighth place on the all-time list, and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-2 victory Thursday over the Philadelphia Phillies.

McGwire entered the game tied with the legendary Mantle but hit his 537th homer, a three-run shot off Phillies ace Curt Schilling (1-2) in the first inning to begin a memorable night.

It was the fifth time in his career that McGwire slammed three homers in a game. Ironically, he last accomplished the feat at Veterans Stadium on May 19, 1998.

McGwire has 64 multi-homer games, moving past Hall of Famer Willie Mays into second place all-time. Babe Ruth tops the list with 72.

McGwire added another prodigious shot in the second inning, a 462-foot blast to left off Schilling which gave the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. He is 4-for-18 (.222) with eight strikeouts in his career against Schilling but all of his hits have been homers.

``Big Mac`s`` third homer in the eighth off reliever Waynes Gomes pushed the lead to 7-2 and put the finishing touch on an awesome performance.

Cardinals starter Garrett Stephenson (6-0) kept his perfect record intact, allowing two runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. The former Phillie struck out three and did not issue a walk.
