"So Dortmunder" I asked the little guy with the clipped British accent, "What's your take?" He looked at me in that funny way of his. "The Red Sox are in an up-trend, the Yankees in a downtrend." Delbert the Parrot, perched on his shoulder said, imitating Dorty's voice perfectly, "Red Sox in up-trend, Red Sox in up-trend...Awk, Awk!" "Dortmunder, I was referring to the markets." I said. "Then be precise with your questions" he said spreading some orange marmalade on his plate of scones.

"I understand that Cramer says this market is boring. Do you recall the blackout of '65. No electricity, no radio for folks to listen to, no telly. Nine months later an extraordinary rise in births. Do you recall this?" "Yeah, I was stuck in a subway car for five hours under Wall St." I replied. "We have undergone a severe sea-change. We're in a bear market. Stocks that have dropped 50-70% or more will have extreme difficulty in mounting more than occasional short-term rallies. Stay mostly on the short side until the sun comes out again. The NASDAQ may hold at these levels. Then again the other galosh may drop and additional pain will be felt by holders of "good" stocks that appear to be cheap and not so nimble traders. I estimate the probability of the NASDAQ holding here at no better than 40%. Continue to sell or short strength and buy or cover ensuing weakness. Would you like a scone?" he said inching the plate toward me. I took one. Delicious. "Thanks Dortmunder, they're delicious." I said. "Indeed." (Lee)
