While Broadcom's new focus on optics via 10GbE will not be substantial to their top line for a couple of years, it's still a fairly significant achievement IMO. Broadcom has always excelled at offering technically-superior products at cheaper prices than the competition. This is how they killed off National and Level One in the LAN PHY world, and how they're going to do so to other broadband access IC companies looking to penetrate the STB/CM/DSL/gateway market.

Broadcom's 10GbE tx/rx should be compared simialr offerings from Vitesse, AMCC, GIGA, and Conexant. They all employ some form of exotic process technology to attain OC-192 SONET rates. GaAs, SiGe, etc are all more expensive than CMOS. Broadcom's $90 price tag is significantly cheaper than pure PHY from the SONET IC guys. Of course sales of this $90 transceiver will not commence until the equipment providers are ready and until a slew of other products come on line. But while 10GbE grows into reality, Broadcom will be innovating the other ICs for 10GbE-switches, et al.

PMC will always be the premier broadband IC company for the backbone...but do not ignore or dismiss Broadcom. I've watched them do some amazing things over the past couple of years and they must be taken seriously.

Regards (long both PMC and Broadcom)...
