Petz, According to this NikkieBp report, AMD has contracted chipset orders with TSMC and Flash memory orders with UMC:nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com __________ TSMC Steals Orders from UMC, Wins Over AMD May 19, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has gained in its march on arch-rival United Microelectronics Corp. in recent competition to secure orders. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), with which UMC has long had a close partnership, placed orders with TSMC a couple of days ago for chips for its Athlon processor. Denying that UMC had suffered a setback, J. R. Hsu, UMC general manager, said that AMD had contracted orders for flash memory to his company. He added that AMD was sensibly spreading its risks and avoiding putting all its eggs in one basket. The AMD Athlon processor is designed to power the next-generation x86 computing platforms. It meets the computation-intensive requirements of cutting-edge software applications running on high-end desktop systems, workstations and servers. In addition, all AMD Athlon processors are now produced using 0.18-micron process technology. The last passage of arms between the two OEM wafer foundry powerhouses ended in a draw. Both companies hoped to win substantial orders from Intel. TSMC won the contract to manufacture chipsets for Intel on an OEM basis, while UMC won similar orders from a slew of companies owned by Intel. Global integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) like Intel and AMD are increasing outsourcing of their production to contract-manufacture wafer fabs like TSMC and UMC, basically because that allows them to allocate their own capacities to more profitable commodities. According to a senior TSMC executive, orders from IDMs accounted for 35 percent of the wafer foundry giant's total capacity between January and April, the highest quarterly volume ever. By comparison, UMC's IDM orders, previously never above 20 percent, rose to take up 21 percent of its total capacity in the same period. _____________________________________________________________________ Goutama
